I Put The Bomp - Great R&R Answer Discs I Put The Bomp - Great R&R Answer Discs : VARIOUS ARTISTS : 2CD
Answer Discs first began to proliferate in the US during the early 1950s, initially in the Country market. At one point around the mid 50s, it seemed that virtually every major C&W hit record was inspiring a reply and, as some of these discs began selling heavily, a few even crossing over to the Pop charts, it was only ever going to be a matter of time before Rock & Roll, R&B and Pop followed suit. Sure enough, by the turn of the 60s everyone was at it - and soon, nobody was safe, even iconic figures like Elvis finding their records subjected to cheeky musical ripostes. This compilation takes twenty-eight of the biggest hits of the era and couples them with their Answer Disc (in a couple of cases, with two, entirely different 'sequels'). Some of these records were hits, many were not; and in truth, several were clearly no more than cash-in, novelty items. But even with tongues wedged firmly in cheeks - e.g. Simon Crum's preposterous 'A Hillbilly's Deck Of Cards' - they certainly made for some enjoyable listening.

Jack Good's Six-Five Special Versus Jack Good's Oh Boy! Jack Good's Six-Five Special Versus Jack Good's Oh Boy! : VARIOUS ARTISTS : CD
Jack Good's Six-Five Special versus Jack Good's Oh Boy! During the 1950s a 'Toddlers' Truce' operated on television between 6-7pm in the UK, during which TV companies ceased transmissions. This ended in February '57, whereupon the BBC launched a new programme directed at teenagers, Six-Five Special. Presented by deejay Pete Murray, it opened to a film of a steam train accompanied by the programme's theme song, played by Don Lang & His Frantic Five. Other regulars on the show included co-comperes Josephine Douglas and boxer Freddie Mills, alongside Tommy Steele, John Barry, Jim Dale and Terry Wayne. A huge success, Six-Five Special was duly celebrated via the release of an EMI LP, which featured many of its regulars. The show had been devised by Jack Good, who eventually left the Beeb to launch a rival ITV programme, Oh Boy!, which premiered in June 1958. Compered by Tony Hall and Jimmy Henney it became an even bigger success, serving to launch the mighty Cliff Richard's career, whilst other regulars on the show included The Vernons Girls, Neville Taylor & The Cutters, Vince Eager, Cuddly Dudley, etc. Oh Boy! was also the subject of an EMI LP, and these two rare, collectors albums have been paired up for this special compilation, with bonus tracks coming from an even rarer 10' Decca LP, Stars Of Six-Five Special.

Love Is A Wailing Thing - The MGM 55000 Series Love Is A Wailing Thing - The MGM 55000 Series : VARIOUS ARTISTS : CD
MGM, the film company, was famous for hitting the big time with Hank Williams when it launched its record label. Like most American labels in the 50s they fielded music in every popular genre. Although they sold records with Ivory Joe Hunter and Billy Eckstine, the company was not particularly big in the R&B field, so in 1955 they launched the 55000 series under the supervision of the legendary Leroy Kirkland. Sadly there were no hits, just a batch of great music featuring doowop, blues, smooth ballads and honking instrumentals. First time on CD for most of these Ultra rare R&B 78s presented here in this unique collector's edition

Mercy Mr. Mercy Mercy Mr. Mercy : VARETTA DILLARD : 2CD
A powerful, versatile, big-voiced singer, Varetta Dillard was rated by many pundits as very nearly the equal of peers like Dinah Washington, Lavern Baker, Ruth Brown and Big Maybelle. However although she undoubtedly possessed a magnificent voice, Varetta was, sadly, physically handicapped, which greatly restricted her career. Consequently, although she registered a trio of big R&B hits during the early 50s, she failed to achieve any significant crossover Pop success and as a result, remains some- thing of a cult figure, little known outside of specialist, collectors circles. Her recording career covered some ten years, from 1951- 61, during which she released twenty-eight singles. All appear on this unique compilation, Disc 1 comprising her Savoy recordings, 1951-55, whilst Disc 2 features her Groove, RCA, Triumph and Cub releases between 1956-61. Also included are a trio of bonus sides, including a cancelled Cub single.

Mister Freddie's Boogie! 1940 to 1947 Mister Freddie's Boogie! 1940 to 1947 : FREDDIE SLACK : CD
The Best Of Slack's jump & boogie sides. His past glories on antiquated 78s were long out of catalogue by the 1950s and Slack was contracted to Mercury in 1955 to cut an LP of recreations of his big successes for the new microgroove market. Ten years later he was dead from complications caused by advanced diabetes; he was just three days away from his 55th birthday. As Mercury discovered in the LP era, now in the digital era we find ourselves Slack-less - a lack of Slack, as it were. His recordings have wickedly been out of print for years, so do yourself a favour, if ya wanna. . . latch on to some of that boogie woogie tonight. You mean some of that fat boogie woogie? That's what I need: If you wanna hear some boogie then I know the place...drop the silver in the slot and latch on to the best of 'Beat Me Daddy' Slack.

Money Honey - Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters 1953-1958 Money Honey - Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters 1953-1958 : CLYDE McPHATTER & THE DRIFTERS : 2CD
The possessor of one of the most influential R&B voices of all time, Clyde McPhatter wasn't merely a wonderful singer, he was directly responsible for founding a dynasty - viz: The Drifters, who've gone on to become a cornerstone of popular music. McPhatter had been lead singer on Billy Ward & the Dominoes' early 50s hits, most notably their 1952 R&B No.1 'Have Mercy Baby', and in 1953 he was poached by Atlantic Records and persuaded to form a new group, who became Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters. They struck paydirt with their very first release, the million-selling 'Money Honey', and subsequently unleashed a remarkable run of hits, including million-sellers 'Such A Night', 'Honey Love' and 'White Christmas'. They also backed fellow-Atlantic artist Ruth Brown on a quartet of sides, billed as 'Her Rhythmakers'. In 1955 Clyde was persuaded to quit to pursue a solo career, which yielded further million-sellers like 'Treasure Of Love', 'Without Love' and 'A Lover's Question'. Meanwhile, The Drifters soldiered on with a new lead singer, Johnny Moore, topping the R&B charts with their very next release, 'Adorable'.

My Girl Janis My Girl Janis : JANIS MARTIN : CD
Janis Martin was marketed as 'The Female Elvis' . . . Just fifteen years of age when she was signed by Elvis Presley's label, RCA-Victor, JANIS MARTIN was effectively the first 'new' female Rock'n'Roller - rivals like Wanda Jackson having already long been active in the Country music field. Janis was marketed as 'The Female Elvis' and she charted heavily with her very first record, 'Will You, Willyum'/'Drug Store Rock'n'Roll', which sold 750,000 copies. Her early discs - notably 'Ooby Doobie', 'My Boy Elvis' and 'Love Me To Pieces' - were all huge sellers, particularly across the South, and several went on to become surprise overseas successes in Europe, South Africa, Australia and Japan. Her international popularity led to one of the rarest, most collectable Elvis artefacts of all time. In 1958, the South African division of RCA released a 10', 8-track, LP titled 'Janis And Elvis', comprising four tracks by each artist. It was hastily withdrawn once Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, learned of its existence and has gone on to become a 'holy grail' item among Elvis collectors. This compilation comprises the nine singles which Janis cut for RCA between 1956-58, alongside the four tracks which comprised her super-rare 'Just Squeeze Me' EP, plus four further sides unreleased at the time.

Nine Times Out Of Ten - The Rock'n'Roll Years (1958-1960) Nine Times Out Of Ten - The Rock'n'Roll Years (1958-1960) : CLIFF RICHARD : 2CD
In the light of his subsequent career, it's often difficult to remember that when he started out, Cliff Richard was a bad-boy Rock'n'Roll singer whose slurred, semi-hiccuped vocals, lip-curling sneers and overtly sexy gyrations on TV's Oh Boy! offended every adult within sight and/or earshot. Cliff was both sufficiently shrewd and ambitious to clean up his act early on, which is ultimately why he was able to grow and mature as an artist - and yet although his music has changed radically over the years, he's always evinced an affection for his R&R roots and he still often features medleys of his early hits in his live set. And those early hits really were something else.
