After A While Crocodile... The 50s Anthology After A While Crocodile... The 50s Anthology : BOBBY CHARLES : CD
Just about the ultimate cult artist, Bobby Charles was a genuine one-off - a fabulous songwriter and a great singer, who actively avoided pursuing either commercial success or even a regular recording career. This compilation anthologises his 1950s recordings, comprising the tracks that he recorded for Chess Records between 1956-57, including his original version of 'See You Later Alligator', plus the almost unfeasibly rare half-dozen singles he cut for Imperial in 1958-59, which have never previously been re-released

As Long As He Needs Me.. The First Five Years 1956-60 As Long As He Needs Me.. The First Five Years 1956-60 : SHIRLEY BASSEY : 2CD
Dame Shirley recorded her first session at IBC studios in January '56, shortly after her nineteenth birthday. Her debut single - which was engineered by a young Joe Meek - paired up 'Burn My Candle' with 'Stormy Weather', another of her signature songs. Whilst it received encouraging reviews, the topside was banned by the BBC for its allegedly lewd lyrics - however the resultant publicity did neither the disc nor Shirley any harm at all, and although it failed to make the Top 30 it was a steady seller. So here are the collected all the hits and favourite tracks from the first five years of Dame Shirley's Phillips, HMV and Columbia recordings.

At His Very Best At His Very Best : GENE KRUPA : 2CD
Gene Krupa was one of the all time great Jazz drummers. Born in 1909 in Chicago, he began playing drums as a child. In his youth he played along side Benny Goodman and Glen Miller before finding fame with Goodman and eventually leaving due to the inevitable clash of personalities. Teaming up with Tommy Dorsey was an emotional milestone which led to him forming a band of his own which he maintained through out the Forties and which forms the bulk of these recordings - his hey day. In the early Fifties he continued with a smaller group - normally a quartet.

Bad Penny Blues - Joe Meek The Early Years Bad Penny Blues - Joe Meek The Early Years : JOE MEEK / VARIOUS : 2CD
Back in the 50s, before he successfully struck out on his own to establish himself as the UK's first wholly independent record producer, JOE MEEK had served a remarkable 'apprenticeship' during the course of which he engineered, co-produced and/or produced countless sessions for many of the UK's established record companies. Joe carved out a highly impressive reputation during this period, working on dozens of hit records - including five UK No.1s - and in addition to his many and various Pop, Skiffle and R&R sessions, he also worked on copious Jazz, Folk, Blues, Calypso and even light orchestral recordings. Many RGM aficionados regard this as the most interesting phase of his oft-controversial career - certainly, it was his most commercially-successful - and this unique compilation offers a comprehensive overview of those early years. Most areas of Meek's musical spectrum are covered (although, being honest, we drew the line at light orchestral!) and this is the first time that many of these artists have been compiled in a Joe Meek context. Astonishingly, perhaps, around a third of these sides are unavailable elsewhere on CD - making this set an absolute 'must-have' for any half-serious Joe Meek fan/collector.

Blues From The Roundhouse Blues From The Roundhouse : ALEXIS KORNER & CYRIL DAVIS : CD
'The Godfather' and 'The Architect' of British Blues, respectively, Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies had each played in various Jazz and Skiffle combos before linking up in 1956, ostensibly to present live music at The Roundhouse pub in London's Soho. Although initially allied to Skiffle, both Cyril and Alexis were considerably more interested in The Blues, as these early recordings testify. The first recorded fruits of their liaison was the unfeasibly-rare 10 inch LP Blues From The Roundhouse, credited to Alexis Korner's Breakdown Group featuring Cyril Davies, recorded in February 1957. This album is the Holy Grail among collectors, as only 99 copies were ever pressed and it has never previously been reissued (NB: it's listed in the Record Collector Price Guide at £1,000+). It was swiftly followed by two equally-rare EPs, each also confusingly titled Blues From The Roundhouse, credited to The Alexis Korner Skiffle Group and Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated featuring Cyril Davies, respectively. These three pivotal releases, plus an LP outtake, make up the backbone (tracks 1-17) of this unique compilation. Only three of these sides have ever previously appeared on CD, making this a genuinely crucial collectors' release. The twelve bonus tracks were all recorded between 1954-56 and feature Alexis and/or Cyril as sidemen.

Boogiology - The Boogie Woogie Masters Boogiology - The Boogie Woogie Masters : VARIOUS ARTISTS : 2CD
Boogie Woogie was and is an important popular music; many modern music historians talk of the longevity of Rap and Hip-Hop over the last quarter of a century, well, Boogie Woogie easily matched that. But this compilation is not a collation of tracks chosen as a dry, academic history of this great, rhythmic music; this is rather a lively menu of more than fifty cuts that assisted in the Big Bang of that cultural explosion and were rewarded by selling well-enough to achieve the giddy heights of the national US black music chart.

Burned! - The Anthology Burned! - The Anthology : RAL DONNER : 2CD
It is, of course, wholly impossible to discuss Ral Donner without at least a passing nod to Elvis' let's face it, Ral has long been acknowledged as the all-time finest Presley 'soundalike'. He famously registered his breakthrough hit in 1961 with 'Girl Of My Best Friend', the song from Elvis Is Back which had been a massive hit for The King in the UK and Europe, but was never issued as a single in the US. Both versions were so aurally alike that when Ral's disc first began to break, its success was propelled by strong rumours that 'Ral Donner' was actually Elvis, singing under a pseudonym. But although his subsequent releases certainly confirmed the similarity between their voices, Ral turned out to be a great singer in his own right - indeed, his very next release, 'You Don't Know What You've Got', was a million seller. He went on to carve out both a significant career and a big reputation and ironically, rarely recorded other material associated with Elvis until many years later. Moreover, Ral enjoyed legendary status among discerning R&R collectors; whilst not vast, his recorded legacy is of an exceptional standard and by the 70s, he'd become one of the most heavily-bootlegged artists of his era.

Butterfly - The Very Best Of Andy Williams 1956 - 1960 Butterfly - The Very Best Of Andy Williams 1956 - 1960 : ANDY WILLIAMS : 2CD
Although now in his eighties, Andy Williams continues to perform and record regularly and he remains as popular today as at any point in his long, illustrious career. However, decades before he evolved into a Easy Listening/MOR icon, selling millions upon millions of albums, he was a successful mainstream Pop singer. He'd initially established himself via a run of hit singles for the Cadence label back in the 50s, with whom he scored an impressive fifteen US chart entries between 1956-60, during which period he honed and perfected the vocal style which would stand him in such good stead over the ensuing decades. This compilation anthologises those early hits (CD1) and for good measure also includes the pick of his album tracks during this same period, drawn from a half-dozen fine LPs (CD2). Like many of his contemporaries, many of Andy's early record successes were either covers or revivals - a scenario which reached its bizarre apogee in the Spring of 1957 with his cover of Charlie Gracie's R&R classic 'Butterfly'. Even more bizarrely, perhaps, Andy actually came out on top of his chart battle with Gracie, topping both the US and UK listings to win his first gold record. However, despite its extraordinary success, his R&R 'career' proved to be pretty short lived and it was soon 'business as usual'...
