The Extended Play series

Extended Play... Extended Play... : BILL HALEY : CD
Decca initially put 'Rock Around The Clock' as the 'b' side to the undistinguished 'Thirteen Women', it was finally to break through in 1955, thanks to its inclusion on the M-G-M soundtrack of 'The Blackboard Jungle' an upcoming movie about juvenile delinquency. After 'Blackboard Jungle' was released in the Spring of 1955, it quickly became a teenage cult movie like 'The Wild One' and 'East of Eden'. However, it was distinct from those in that it featured Rock 'n' Roll music - the first full length movie to do so. The impact of the song played at full volume in theatres coupled with images of teenage disaffection on the screen made an indelible imprint on a generation. The success of 'Blackboard Jungle' encouraged Decca to re-sample and re-promote 'Rock Around The Clock'. This and the fact it was one of the best records ever made it became a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic and went on to sell millions A true innovator and Rock 'n' Roll legend! Collected here are some great sides that feature on eleven of those wonderful EPs of the 1950s.

Extended Play... Extended Play... : JOHNNY AND THE HURRICANES : CD
Tenor saxophonist Johnny Paris formed them and they became one of the most vibrant of the instrumental rock 'n' roll acts of the era. Their unique sound was characterised by the rinky-dink Hammond organ of Paul Tesluk and the rasping sax of Johnny Paris. Their first hit 'Crossfire' shot up the American charts for a fourteen week reign peaking at No.23 in Billboard's pop Hot 100. It was their follow-up, the riveting 'Red River Rock' that introduced the trademark Johnny And The Hurricanes sound featuring Paul Tesluk's prominent Hammond organ. This was to form a pattern for most of their future releases choosing traditional songs and giving them the rocking Hurricanes treatment.

Extended Play... Extended Play... : ADAM FAITH : CD
Adam Faith the 'Golden Boy' came very close to setting a pop music chart world record in mid 1960, when trying for three number No. 1 hits in a row with successive single releases. He only missed out by a slender 1 point margin with the third of the releases. Adam's meteoric rise to pop stardom began in late 1959 when his first recording for Parlophone 'What Do You Want?' rocketed to the number 1 spot soon after release. Early in 1960 the follow up 'Poor Me' arrived at the number 1 slot. Just a couple of months later 'Someone Else's Baby' narrowly missed completing the hat -trick and settled in the number 2 position for several weeks. It wasn't long after in mid June that Adam was climbing the charts again, this time with a beat version of an oldie 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home' which became another top 5 hit. At its peak 'What Do You Want?' was selling 50,000 a day on its way to the top spot.

Extended Play... Extended Play... : VENTURES : CD
The Californian rock instrumental heroes The Ventures genuinely deserve their legendary status. Although they were to go on to release 200 plus albums worldwide. In these early days of their British and European releases it was left to the 4 track EP to showcase the groups American hits on one piece of Vinyl with picture sleeves. Their first two UK hits 'Walk Don't Run' and Perfidia hit the pop charts top ten in September and December 1960. More hits followed in 1961, as did the EPs in those early years of the sixties. The Ventures constructed a powerful, compulsive sound, which not only became their trademark, but it was also echoed in the concurrent surfing scene style. 'Walk Don't Run' reached number 2 in the U.S. charts and a top ten placing in the U.K. It went on to sell over a million copies, as did their follow up 'Perfidia' . Their continued appeal lay in their ability to embrace contemporary fashion without straying too far from their hit formula. They also survived several personnel changes along the way.

Extended Play... Extended Play... : BUDDY HOLLY : CD
One of the first major rock'n' roll ground breakers and also one of its most influential artists. He wrote his own songs, recorded with a self-contained guitar/ bass / drums combo and changed the image of what a rock'n' roll singer should look like. His bespectacled image became iconic. Despite a relatively brief carrier, tragically cut short on 3rd February 1959 (aka ''the day the music died''), when the plane he was in crashed in Clear Lake, U. S. A. Holly was killed along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper who were also on board - Holly had changed the face of popular music for ever..

Extended Play... Extended Play... : COASTERS : CD
This is a fine collection from An American rhythm and blues / rock and roll vocal group who had a string of hits in the late 1950 having started in October 1955. The original members of The Coasters were Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Bobby Nunn and Leon Hughes. In 1956, they released their first hit 'Down In Mexico' which sold 500,000 copies and in 1957 and they topped the R&B charts and made the Top Ten with their double-sided single 'Searchin' and 'Young Blood' They had a series of hit singles filled with instantly adaptable slang and timeless humour. 'Yakety Yak' comically addressed the generation gap long before that term was coined, while 'Charlie Brown' was a character study of a class clown that featured Will 'Dub' Jones' unforgettable line: 'Why's everybody always pickin' on me?' By the end of the decade, they'd carved out a legacy for themselves as purveyors of riotously funny rock and roll records with a solid R&B underpinning.

Extended Play... Extended Play... : MICHAEL HOLLIDAY : CD
His unmistakable singing style had developed after years of hard graft as a dance-band vocalist, He became one of the stand out vocalists of the '50s and one of a small band of singers who can be identified immediately his voice is heard. The singularity of performance coupled with his delightfully relaxed approach and carefree treatment was possibly the secret of his success. Holliday made his first public appearance as a singer when his ship docked in New York and he entered a talent contest and won on the stage of Radio City Music Hall, one of the world's famous and largest theatres. On his return to Britain and his release from the Navy, Michael obtained work as a singer / guitarist with Eric Winstone's Band, touring the UK holiday camps. Signing a record contract with Columbia in 1955. During the next couple of years he covered several U.S. hits which began the start of a string of hits throughout the 1950s. Since his debut on Columbia in 1955, his relaxed voice won him a tremendous following. Shortly after his first record he became the resident singer on T.V.'s 'More Contrary' programme, and viewers were able to see that the easy-going voice perfectly suited this charming man. Back in 1955 he was hailed as a thrilling new voice, and his velvety smoothness of tone, ease of diction, and impeccable phrasing was likened to the best work of Bing Crosby and Dean Martin.

Extended Play... Extended Play... : SHADOWS : CD
British instrumental kings evolved from the Five Chesternuts to become Cliff Richards backing group, The Drifters. By late 1958 the line up had settled and they were to change their name to the Shadows to avoid any confusion with the American Drifters. The line up was Hank B. Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. Not long after backing Cliff Richard on his first single, they were signed as a group by EMI Columbias A&R manager Norrie Paramor. After two singles under their old name the Drifters came the vocal Saturday Dance, which didnt make any impression with the buying public. It was in 1960 that things took a huge step forward when they met up with singer / songwriter Jerry Lorden who gave them the finest instrumental of the era Apache and became a UK number 1, topping the charts for six weeks as well as being voted single of the year by much of the music press. Establishing the Shadows in their own right especially as they had knocked Cliffs Please Dont Tease off the top spot. They went on to be a huge influence on a new generation of groups that were to follow. The instrumental hits continued with number 1s Kon-Tiki, Wonderful Land, Dance On and Foot Tapper as well as other top ten hits The Frightened City, FBI, Guitar Tango and The Savage. Despite all the chart success both Tony Meehan and Jet Harris would leave the group to be replaced by drummer Brian Bennett and bassist Brian Locking. The Shadows continued to chart in 1963 and 1964 although the Mersey Beat boom had taken hold.
